Girls are Playing Sports! – Cesaret Derneği

We launched our first project in the summer of 2010 as girl’s soccer. We were very lucky to have Ahmet Reis, who is well liked and respected on the island, to volunteer to be their coach.

To succeed in such a project, a lot of things had to be designed right from the beginning. How do we reach the daughters of families living on the island year around? Would parents want their daughters to play soccer? How would we know that the children’s health conditions are appropriate to participate in such a sports program? Should we ask for a medical report from their family doctors? There were a lot of questions in our minds. Our friend Sema Kasapoğlu had initiated a soccer project at Kireçburnu, we were modeling ours after her success story. She played a very important role that summer in encouraging us. She also donated their first uniforms shown in the photograph. In the autumn of 2010, the islanders and visitors couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw our girls running around on the soccer field on Heybeliada.

We initiated the basketball project the second year at the request of our girls. They wanted to get taller, that was their reasoning. Ali Apak, who is also an islander and a well known basketball player joined Ahmet Reis. They have been volunteering their time to coach the team since then. We thank them for building such a successful program.

The second photo was taken at the league award ceremony that took place on 16 May 2016. There are three players who are pictured in the first photo as well. Could you find our them? They wanted to play basketball instead of football to get taller. It seems like we did well by listening to their wishes.
